Artful arches
At The Ode To we are always curious to learn more about creativity and artistry, so we asked Danish designer and artist Natasja Lykke Jensen to tell us a little bit about her life, her art and her sources of inspiration.
Natasja Lykke Jensen
What do you call the series of artworks that you have created for The Ode To?
– It’s called Archways, because of how the motive, or theme, is repeated in different perspectives, forms, and materials.
What technique have you used?
– My paintings are made with acrylic paint, brushes and a huge amount of masking tape or a steady hand. They are painted on 100% natural linen, and I always leave a spot with unpainted canvas to create depth and tactility in my paintings. The reliefs are made of Styrofoam, concrete, and limestone on canvas. Both types of artworks are framed with bespoke natural oak frames.
What inspires you?
– My inspiration for these artworks has been beautiful places with rounded doors, like arches. I wanted to create the feeling of “a room in a room” when viewing the artworks, no matter whether it is a flat painting, a three-dimensional wall relief or a sculpture.
In what way is interior design important for your work?
– I'm very inspired by architecture and interior design, and I want to create interior objects that add a feeling of spatiality in a room. I think the rounded shapes add harmony and calmness to my very graphic, minimalistic style. I do admire a lot of people within art and design, but I especially like the way interior stylist Pernille Vest combines great art and design with amazing spaces and colour tones in a calm and minimalistic way – it kind of gives me the same feeling I want to express in my art.
Could you tell us about your background and how you came to be an artist?
– I'm a Danish designer and artist based in Copenhagen, and I have a Master of Arts in Communication Design from Design School Kolding. For a couple of years, I had my own design studio, working mainly as a graphic designer and art director. Gradually, I started making room to be more creative and to make more art, however, still with a very conceptual and graphic approach to it.
How would you describe your art and aesthetics in three words?
– Minimalistic, graphic, harmonic.
